Writing A Competitive Grant Proposal

A new grant writing program for researchers in radiology, radiation oncology, nuclear medicine, and related sciences who are interested in actively pursuing federal funding. Guided by a faculty of leading researchers with extensive experience in all aspects of grant applications and funding, the program will focus on developing realistic expectations of and tools for getting started on the grant process.

Clinical Trials Methodology Workshop

This intensive 6½-day workshop is intended for faculty members and fellows in radiology, radiation oncology, and nuclear medicine academic departments. Investigators with an MD or PhD degree are eligible to apply. Applicants should be in, or plan to enter, a career track that will permit them to be a Principal Investigator on a clinical trial. Participants will learn how to develop protocols for the clinical evaluation of imaging modalities. Familiarity with basic concepts and techniques of statistics and study design is needed for all applicants. Over the course of the workshop, each workshop trainee will be expected to develop a protocol for a clinical study, ready to include in an application for external funding. The workshop will be held January 10–16, 2009 in Scottsdale, Arizona.

Introduction to Academic Radiology (formerly Introduction to Research)

The objectives of the Introduction to Academic Radiology program, cosponsored by the RSNA, the Association of University Radiologists (AUR), and the American Roentgen Ray Society (ARRS), are to introduce residents to academic radiology  in the second year of their residencies, demonstrate the importance of research in diagnostic radiology, illustrate the excitement of academic careers, and introduce residents to successful clinical radiology researchers. Successful applicants will be assigned to either the program held during the 2008 RSNA Scientific Assembly (November 30 to December 4) or the one held during 2009 ARRS Scientific Meeting. Nominations are  invited for  residents based in programs in the US and Canada.

Advanced Course in Grant Writing

The purpose of the Advanced Course in Grant Writing is to assist participants, generally junior faculty members, to prepare and submit a quality grant application to the NIH, NSF, or other equivalent institution by the October 2009 NIH deadline. The participant must possess an MD or PhD and be a faculty member in a radiology, radiation oncology, or nuclear medicine program. The Advanced Course consists of four multi-day sessions spanning a 9-month period, held at RSNA Headquarters in
Oak Brook, Illinois.

NIH Grantsmanship Workshop

The goal of this half-day workshop is to provide participants with an introduction to writing a grant proposal for the NIH, specifically related to the radiological sciences. Topics covered include elements of a good grant proposal, understanding the review process, and planning the proposal. The next workshop will be held during the RSNA Scientific Assembly and Annual Meeting on Monday, December 1, 2008.

Revitalizing the Radiology Research Enterprise (RRRE)

RRRE is an ongoing program aimed at enhancing research in radiology and radiation oncology. RRRE activities include a workshop held every 2 years (odd numbered years only) and site visits to selectively chosen institutions. A one and one half-day workshop took place October 19-20, 2007 at the RSNA Headquarters in Oak Brook, Illinois, for representatives from departments of radiology, radiation oncology, and nuclear medicine. Six departments were selected from applications received in response to an RFA.  The next workshop will take place in the fall of 2009.
