Continuous Quality Improvement Initiative

QI TRAINING & EDUCATION

The Quality Improvement Committee (QIC) is continually developing new radiology-specific training and education programs to support RSNA members and their team in facilitating practice assessment and quality improvement (QI). There are also several public and private national organizations and institutions that provide professionals with educational opportunities focused on general aspect of QI skills and quality leadership.

Quality Improvement Programs at RSNA 2008

QI Symposium

For the second year, the RSNA annual meeting will offer two courses focusing on QI methods and concepts, and include examples of implementing radiology-specific projects.QIC is offering an all-day program, on Tuesday, December 2, that will highlight experiences of radiology professionals in conducting QI. The Radiology Informatics Committee (RIC) has planned a course for the morning of Wednesday, December 3, that looks at information technology's (IT) role in enabling radiologists and radiology professionals to provide safe, quality care to patients. Both have new looks with exciting topics and speakers.

Each session in Tuesday’s QI program provides an opportunity to hear a series of speakers share their personal experiences on designing and implementing QI projects, illustrating tools used to conduct the project, and offer a list of resources to support the improvement initiative. Session topics include:

§ Improvements to procedure and system processes
§ Assessing satisfaction at the peer, staff, and patient levels
§ Patient safety in the radiology suite, and
§ Individual performance measurement and assessment including peer review and theradiologist scorecard

Scheduled speakers include:

Peter Angood, MD
James P. Borgstede, MD
Kristen Dean
Michelle Dean
Charles Denman, MD
Lane F. Donnelly, MD

N. Reed Dunnick, MD

The two-hour course on Wednesday looks at the next generation IT requirements for improving quality and safety for Radiology. Speakers will use case examples to demonstrate how information technology tools are used to improve:

         § c
linical appropriateness
         § access to services
§ report quality and turnaround time
§ communication of critical test results

Additional discussion in this course will focus on the importance of system integration and offer possible strategies to use with existing IT standards to enable quality and safety improvements in radiology practices.

Invited speakers for this course are David Avrin, MD, PhD, Paul Chang, MD, and Ramin Khorasani,MD, MPH.

Quality Improvement Roundtable for Radiology

The QIC created the Quality Improvement Roundtable for Radiology in 2007 with the aim of fostering a culture of quality and safety in radiology through interactive exchange of information. The Roundtable offers radiologists and radiology professionals a forum to actively discuss issues, challenges, and successes of quality improvement (QI) projects in their practices. Benefits of participating in a Roundtable include hearing up-to-date information from peers on important developments and new ideas in quality and safety, and then using the information to plan practice improvements.

This year’s Roundtable sessions are targeted to radiologists and radiology professionals working in the United States or Canada, and each session will focus on a topic from the QI symposium. Space is currently available in the following session:

§  Customer Satisfaction with Dr. Scott Gazelle – Wednesday, December 4, at 9:00 AM

If you would like to register for this Roundtable session, or for more information, please e-mail quality@rsna.org or  call(630) 368-3747.  Seating is limited, so please register as soon as possible.
