RSNA William R. Eyler Editorial Fellowship

Sponsored by the RSNA Publications Council and the Committee on International Relations and Education (CIRE), the RSNA Eyler Editorial Fellowship is designed to provide an opportunity for a radiologist in mid-career to further his/her experience in radiologic journalism.

The fellow will learn about manuscript preparation, peer review, manuscript editing, journal production, printing, and electronic publishing. One fellow will be selected each year and will be awarded a stipend of $10,000. For 2 weeks, he or she will have temporary residence in Boston, Massachusetts, working with the editor of Radiology. The fellow will also travel to the editorial office of RadioGraphics in Bethesda, Maryland, for a 2-day visit, and the RSNA office in Oak Brook, Illinois, where 2 days will be spent with the Publications Department. The fellow will also assist the editors and attend editorial meetings during the RSNA annual meeting. Each editorial office and the Publications Department will work with the fellow to develop a mutually convenient schedule of visits.

ELIGIBILITY

Candidate must:

  • Be an RSNA member
  • Have accomplished 3-5 years of attending-level work at an academic institution
  • Have served as a reviewer for a major imaging journal
  • Be affiliated with a national radiologic society of his or her country

Application Process

RSNA members from North America and from outside North America are eligible to apply. Editorial fellowship applications must be received on or before May 1 and must include the following:

  1. A curriculum vitae
  2. A personal statement that describes the candidate's objectives in radiology journalism, including — for those from outside North America — a specific plan on how the knowledge and experience gained from this fellowship will be used to improve radiologic scholarship in the candidate's home country.
  3. Three letters of reference: one of the three must be from the candidate's department chair and must indicate that the chair agrees to let the candidate be away from the department if the candidate is selected as a fellow. If the candidate is from outside North America, (1) the letter from the department chairman of the candidate's home institution must attest to the candidate's written and verbal fluency in English; and (2) one of the other two letters must be from a national radiologic society of the candidate's home country.

Selection Process and Evaluation

The successful candidate will be notified of selection by July 1. Following each fellowship, the fellow will submit a report on the effects of the fellowship on the individual, the department, the radiologic or societal community, and, if the fellow is from outside North America, the home country.
