International Radiology Education
International Visiting Professor Program

The RSNA has supported international education through its International Visiting Professor Program since 1986. This program, administered by the Committee on International Relations and Education (CIRE), was restructured to support small teams of visiting professors to lecture at national or regional  radiology meetings of societies in or serving developing nations, as well as at selected host institutions with radiology residency training programs, in those countries.

Visiting Professor Program

Interested candidates should be dynamic, experienced radiology teachers who currently hold an academic appointment in North America or other developed country, as designated by the World Health Organization. The IVP must adapt his or her presentation to the host country's local disease patterns, medical priorities, and specific educational needs.

The RSNA invites interested parties to complete the application form for registration in the newly created Database of International Speakers. The CIRE will use this database as a tool to identify possible candidates for IVP teams, according to subspecialty, experience, and, where necessary, language ability, having identified the host society needs. An entry in the database will be kept for three years after which the registrant will be given the opportunity to re register. The registrant can request removal from the database at any time.

Appointed IVPs should be available for up to a two-week visit, with time spent at the national society meeting and traveling to two to three host institutions. IVPs generally travel within the host country as a team but are occasionally invited to make separate institutional visits. All travel and housing arrangements will be coordinated and planned by each IVP and the appointed team captain, in cooperation with a contact from the host country's national society. Evaluation forms and a full written report must be submitted within one month of returning.

RSNA and the Host Society cover all program-related expenses, including coach class travel. IVPs may not receive funding from sources other than the host institution, their own institution, and the RSNA. In addition, the CIRE has a budget to provide for a donation of educational materials from the RSNA Education Resources Catalog to the host institution(s).

Host Country Program

National radiology societies in, or that primarily serve, developing countries are invited to apply to host an International Visiting Professor (IVP) team. The IVP team will lecture at the host’s national radiology society meeting. In addition, that society will select and organize visits to educational institutions that have active radiology training programs with the need and potential for educational enrichment from a visiting professor team. Host society applications should describe specific educational needs (e.g., modality or organ-specific interests).

Applications must be completed jointly by the national radiology society and the host institutions. In addition, applications must specify the names of institution staff fluent in English, the number of residents in each year of training, and the percentage of those residents who are capable of understanding teaching presentations delivered in English. Educational institutions that are adjuncts of private practices are not eligible for this program.

The host society is expected to

  • provide hotel and meals for the IVP team for the duration of their visit;
  • appoint a contact who will be able to communicate program, schedule, and hospitality arrangements with the IVP team members and the RSNA staff contact;
  • complete evaluation forms provided by the RSNA  within two weeks of the IVP visit.

Deadline for 2010 host societies: December 31, 2008
